CONNELL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
1909-1968
The
CHS 2009 Reunion Committee is making final arrangements for this
summer’s August 15th -16th reunion and
wanted to remind you to be sure to register for this special event.
There is much chatter between alumni to solicit and verify fellow
classmate attendance. The committee would appreciate having your
registration form completed and sent in by July 1st
or soon thereafter.
The Program Sub-Committee is
busy putting together a great weekend with entertainment, prizes,
music, do-you-remember-when, old school/classmate pictures and
opportunity for extended visiting. This is a “once in a life time”
activity to get together with that “young” classmate you miss,
wanted to ask questions or just chat about life experience. Our
registrar, Carolyn Davis Chase ‘58, tells us we have well over a
hundred alumni registered and more coming in all the time.
There will be a room set aside
at the community center for CHS memorabilia, so bring your CHS
“stuff” to share. Send a copy of favorite pictures to Sheila
(Thompson) Poe ’65; 21634 Hwy. 2 East; Hartline, WA, 99135, or send
scanned photos to:
poedunk@televar.com. Include a list of your favorite songs
too. Please bring your camera or video to the reunion so pictures
can be made available on the CHS Website.
Also, we need those CHS trivia
questions. ex: “Who drove a red and yellow 1963 convertible”? Who
drove 100 mph down Main Street? Send your trivia questions and
answers to Carol (Smith) Berry ‘65 at
CHSreunion09@msn.com. The trivia activity will be a hoot at the
banquet.
Encourage fellow alumni or a
favorite faculty member to attend this fun- packed reunion. Early
registration will aid in the committee’s planning process. Come
join the reunion party. We’ll see you there. If you have any
questions, or a special request, contact a Reunion Committee
member.

Want to take part in preserving Connell's history?
Here is the architect's
conceptual design for the Connell Heritage Museum building
expansion. The Museum Board of Directors has formed a committee to
pursue the proposed project. The Building Committee is currently
developing marketing and funding strategies to secure long-term
financing & community support necessary for this new asset. They
anticipate that the majority of funding will come from government
and private foundation grants; however, community interest and
support is a major force in this endeavor.
The Committee’s core volunteer
group is in place and looking for others to participate in this
project. Individuals with a “Can Do Attitude”, communication and
computer skills, document control, or marketing experience are
encouraged to contact the committee chairman. What a great
opportunity to invest in the past and future of North Franklin
County communities. Please consider being a part of this
organization.
The Building Committee’s near
term goal is to have a full-scale project plan in place ready to
kick-off this spring when the Museum opens. For further information,
contact Arnold Hudlow 509-234-7281, Committee Chairman.

Denzel Washington, and
Brooks Army Medical Center
Don't know whether you heard about this but
Denzel Washington and his
family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center , in San
Antonio ,
Texas the other day. This is where soldiers who have been
evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States,
especially burn victims There are some buildings there called Fisher
Houses. The Fisher House is a Hotel where soldiers' families can
stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the
Hospital. Brook's has quite a few of these houses on base, but as
you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time.
While Denzel Washington was visiting,
they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much
one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and
wrote a check for the full amount
right there on the spot. The
soldiers were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out
to the American public, because it warmed their hearts.
The
question is?? Who's movies do we support? That
great Academy Award winner Sean Penn or someone like Denzel
Washington?

Preparing For Your High School Reunion
Some people view a
class reunion as a rite of passage, while others may see it as a
painful reminder of time marching on. Whatever your personal take on
a class reunion, you can usually count on receiving an invitation
every ten years or so. Preparing yourself for a class reunion
involves a number of emotional, logistical and financial
considerations you won't find on the official invitation from your
high school class reunion committee.
It is not unusual
to have mixed emotions about attending a class reunion. While the
possibility of reconnecting with former friends can be exciting,
there is also the possibility of rekindling a few not so fond
memories. One way to prepare for a class reunion emotionally is to
keep your expectations realistic. Thirty and forty year reunions can
be especially variable, since many of the participants may be
enjoying working at good jobs while others may be struggling to
attain financial stability. Still others may or may not be enjoying
retirement.
Consider the
bittersweet nature of a class reunion. You may discover that some
classmates have passed away since graduation, while others have
faced major upheavals in their lives. While the nostalgic elements
of a class reunion often take center stage, it may help to view your
classmates as contemporaries facing the same adult challenges you
face. Try to relate to the 48, 58 or 68 year old grandmother as much
as the 18-year-old classmate you remember.
One consideration
when preparing for a class reunion is logistics. The official
invitation should include times and dates of the event itself, but
transportation and lodging are your responsibility. You may have to
request several days of vacation or personal time from your
employer. Your spouse may also have to make special arrangements in
order to accompany you to the class reunion. Travel could mean
packing the family car or reserving tickets for the nearest airport
to the venue. Some attendees contact former friends who still live
in the area for overnight housing.
Financially, the
cost of a class reunion can be prohibitive. Besides the traveling
expenses, the price of the tickets is often substantial. There may
also be other events scheduled throughout the reunion weekend, each
with their own costs. Be prepared to budget extra money for
entertainment, food and beverages.
Some things you may
want to pack for a class reunion include yearbooks, photographs from
high school days, current photographs of your family, and a blank
scrapbook for class reunion events. The most important thing to
remember is to live in the moment whenever possible. A class reunion
can be a very positive and memorable milestone in any adult's life.
